Jim Williams
Jim Williams is a 1973 graduate of the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill where he studied Taekwondo. In August
of 1973 he moved to Elizabeth City, North Carolina where he
began a career teaching high school English, retiring in 2003.
During the 1970's he studied under Sensei Barry McCarty and
Sensei Tola Lewis, director of the National Karate Jiu-Jitsu
Union. From 1978 to 1993 his interest shifted to health and
fitness, focusing on running and calisthenics. From 1993 to
2002 he studied Yang style Taijiquan and Qigong
independently, learning from any teacher with whom he could
make contact. Since 2002 Jim has been a student and
assistant to Sifu Scott Grady. He states, "I learned more in one
year under Sifu Grady than I was able to piece together during
the previous eight years. Wushu us an enormous and complex
puzzle. Only a genuine teacher with roots in China can help put
together this puzzle. It is an extraordinary relationship." Jim
Williams will begin teaching a beginner's Taijiquan class at the
Riverwind Health and Racquet Club in Elizabeth City in
September 2004
