Miyahira Tamotsu,
Sigong
Miyahira, Tamotsu started learning Okinawan Karate in elementary
school. After high school in 1983 he was able to go to China to study at
Wuhan Physical Education College in Hubei. His studies consisted of
martial arts, anatomy, sports medicine, psychology, Chinese philosophy,
and ancient Chinese literature.
While attending college in Wuhan, Sigong Miyahira met and later become
a disciple of the late Wen Jingming. Grand Master Wen was one of nine
people to demonstrate wushu at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. He also was a
bodyguard to the president of Taiwan. Grand Master Wen was known
throughout the Chinese martial arts community for his high level of martial
skills. In his later years Grand Master Wen wrote a book, Kao Shou Fan
Zi Quan, which means “Boxing with Cuffed Hands.” Master Wen only
passed this style of Fan Zi Quan to eleven people in his lifetime. Sigong
Miyahira was the last to be taught this style by Grand Master Wen before
his death in 1985.
In China Sigong Miyahira met several martial artists from varied
backgrounds. This gave him the opportunity to learn Ba Ji Quan, Chen
Tai Ji Quan, and Yang Tai Ji Quan. He was also taught several of the
Cha Quan sets by Lin Yuhua.
As a foreigner he was able to graduate with a degree in Chinese martial
science and coaching. He was one of the first foreigners to receive a
degree from the Chinese government and is officially recognized by the
Chinese government as having a degree in martial sciences.
In 1989, Sigong Miyahira was able to attend the eleventh Asian Olympic
Science Competition as a delegate for Japan. Thirty-six nations were
represented in this competition. This gave him the opportunity to lecture
on the differences between Chinese and Japanese martial arts.
In 1991, after coming back to Okinawa, he and his wife, Song Li, opened
Tian Xing Jian Chinese Wushu Association. Using over twenty-five years
of martial arts experience Sigong Miyahira has taught over 1000
students. His association has grown to three branches of martial arts
school in Okinawa and the United States.
Sigong Miyahira, Tamotsu has spent over half of his life learning and
teaching Chinese martial arts and has written articles for Chinese martial
arts magazine in Japan. He also works with the Naha police department
